New film released – Tsunamis: towards the next breakthrough
As we approach the 20th anniversary of the catastrophic Indian Ocean Tsunami of 26 December 2004, we’ve released a film about how we are working to help protect vulnerable communities from future tsunamis.
Working with partners, we’ve developed new techniques to simulate realistic scale tsunami waves, leading to a greater understanding of how the waves interact with the coastline and buildings. This has directly fed into the codes of practice that are now being implemented by engineers.
However, we believe our simulator can be further finessed, so the film also looks at current work to develop a digital twin of a dual generator that would simulate the return wave. We will need a new permanent facility to house such a simulator, which would allow researchers to push the boundaries further in understanding.
