Collaboration delivers world-first in tsunami simulation

An HR Wallingford/UCL research collaboration has created the world’s most realistic tsunami waves using their new ‘dual generator’ technique.

Previously, our tsunami simulator has only modelled the wave coming in to shore. Now, the ‘dual generator’ enables the team to see the effects of the wave as it goes back towards the sea, crucial to build a realistic picture of the scour (erosion) around the foundations of buildings.

The UN says that 700 million people are at risk from tsunamis and the team is keen to develop the technique further to build tsunami resistant buildings for vulnerable communities around the world.

In our new film, we followed the team in 2023 as they tested the new technology for the first time…
